Operate the switch and say the blue main beam warning light is on.

Turn on headlights and fog light and check warning light is on in dashboard. Explain that they are used when foggy+visibility is below 100mts.

Set all relevant controls, including fan, temperature, air direction/source and heated screen to clear windscreen and windows. The engine does not have to be started for this demonstration.

Operate controls to wash and wipe windscreen.(switch the ignition on, but don't turn on the engine.)

Operate the brake pedal and make use of reflections in windows or garage doors, or get someone to help.(The examiner is allowed to check for you)

Turn on hazard lights and walk around car checking all bulbs are working, (don't forget side bulbs)

Apply foot on brake so you don't roll. Release the handbrake and reapply it. Then tell examiner, "I have checked that it stays up and does not come past about 45 degrees".

Wiggle the steering wheel and say "The steering at the moment is heavy and stiff, when I turn the engine on it should become lighter".

Press the horn and listen for the beep. Deaf pupils should open the window and place a hand on the outside of the door to feel for vibrations. Make sure you say, 'The horn is working'.

TELL ME-

Say "The warning light should illuminate if there is a fault"

Say "The head restraint should be adjusted, so the right part is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as comfortable".NB Some restraints might not be adjustable

Say "With the engine running, brakes shouldn't feel spongy or slack, then I would check them with the car moving and the car shouldn't pull to one side".

Say "There should be no cuts and bulges and at least 1.6 mm of tread depth across the middle 3/4 of the tyre all the way around".

Say "The information is in the car handbook, I would use a reliable pressure gauge to check and adjust them when they are cold, checking all 5 tyres, and replacing all the valve caps".

Turn on the lights and say that you would walk around the car, checking all relevant bulbs are on.

UNDER THE BONNET-

Point to the engine coolant and say "The level should be between the minimum and maximum markers, I would only top this up when temperature was cold".

Point to the brake fluid reservoir and say "The level should be between the minimum and maximum markers".

Point to the windscreen washer reservoir and say "The level should be between the minimum and maximum markers".or if the reservoir has no markers, say "I would lift the lid up and look in".

Point to the dipstick and say "I would take the dipstick out, wipe it clean put it back in, take it out again and check the oil is between the minimum and maximum markers".
